About Queen Kapiolani Hotel
Queen Kapi'olani was born Kapi'olani Napelakapuokaka'e, in Hilo in 1834, into the chiefly lineage of Kaua'i. She became Queen when her second husband, David Kalakaua won the election in 1874 after the death of King Lunalilo. A woman of humility and composure, Queen Kapi'olani was known for her grand receptions and dedication to the health of her people. She founded the Kapi'olani Maternity Home in 1890, now called the Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children, to improve birth rates for mothers and their babies. An accomplished musician and composer, she also preferred to speak in her native tongue throughout her life instead of the more popular English. A large painting of Queen Kapi'olani in her famous blue peacock accented dress, which she wore during her trip to London to meet her equal Queen Victoria, hangs in the lobby of the Queen Kapiolani Hotel.
